What happened

AWS and OpenAI announced a wider partnership on April 28, 2026. The launch covers three new offerings on Amazon Bedrock, all in limited preview.

First, OpenAI models on Amazon Bedrock. The latest OpenAI models, including GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.4, are now callable through Bedrock APIs with the same security, governance, and cost controls AWS customers already use.

Second, Codex on Amazon Bedrock. The OpenAI coding agent is available through Bedrock via the Codex CLI, a desktop app, and a VS Code extension.

Third, Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents powered by OpenAI. The new product runs production-ready OpenAI agents on AWS using OpenAI's frontier models and the OpenAI agent harness.

Usage of OpenAI models and Codex on AWS counts toward existing AWS cloud commitments. The May 4, 2026 AWS Weekly Roundup highlighted the announcement again as part of the broader What's Next with AWS 2026 coverage.

Why it matters

The partnership puts OpenAI inside the cloud where many enterprises already build. For teams that already buy AWS commit, this removes a procurement and billing step. It also positions Bedrock as a one stop place to mix Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, and OpenAI models behind a single API.

Limited preview means access is gated for now. Teams should not assume general availability or production-grade SLAs yet.

MintedBrain take

For enterprise builders, the news mainly changes deployment paths. You can now request preview access to OpenAI-powered agents inside AWS without leaving the AWS account. The race between Bedrock, Vertex AI, and Azure AI Foundry just got hotter.
